Why was the 'Happy Prince' happy when alive but sad when dead?

Happy prince was happy when he was alive because in the castle he lived, sadness was not allowed inside. But he was sad when dead because he was made as a statue facing his kingdom. So now he was able to see the sufferings of all his subjects. So he helplessly cries all day...
