Increase in land tax was imposed by Muhammad bin Tughlaq to expand his kingdom. He increased the tax on the Doab area which was very fertile.It was the area located between the Ganga and the Yamuna rivers. The tax was increased at the time when monsoons failed and agriculture failed miserably.
