In the ancient times , many ships used to sail to India from all over the world through the waters surrounded by India. So these waters were named as Indian Ocean

Indian ocean is called so because it surrounds Indian sub continent. and this is how it got itz name.many navigators and sea travellers wanted to travel to India, they were interested in Indian route, inorder to reach india.w hen they finally discovered the route it began to be called as Indian ocean.the ocean has been dominated by the Indians since 3100 bce( the date of Mahabharata war) that it was known as Indian ocean.
