The Indus plains were known as "bread-basket" of ancient India because of their fertility and production. The Indus river was a constant source of water for these plains and its recurrent flooding had made the soil of these plains very fertile. So there was large production of grains and rice in these plains. Moreover, the foreign conquerors often controlled these plains while establishing their rule in India.
