1. India was born through a partition based on religious differences and people of India was suffering through a traumatic experience .

2. The citizens of India were emerging from the status of subjects to that of citizens.

3. The British had left it to the rulers of the princely states to decide whether they want to merge with India or with Pakistan or remain independent. The merger of these Princely states was a difficult task .

4. The future of the country did not look as secure as it does today. The makers of the Indian Constitution had anxieties about it.
