Monroe doctrine was a declaration made by President James Monroe of U.S. in 1832.

It was a declaration saying that U.S. won't tolerate a European nation colonizing an independent nation in North or South America. U.S. warned that it would consider any such act in the Western Hemisphere as hostile.

This statement of James Monroe was specifically directed towards Spain which U.S. thought would try to take over its former colonies in South America, which had declared their independence.

Although the statement is named after President Monroe but it was actually authored by John Quincy Adams, Monroe's secretary of state.
