It helps in the identification of living organisms as well as in understanding the diversity of living organisms. Classification helps us to learn about different kinds of plants and animals, their features, similarities and differences.

Explanation:

When there is a need to study the characteristics of organisms for research, studying millions of organisms is impractical and impossible as well. The problem can be solved by classifying living organisms.

For a long time, living organisms was classified into two kingdoms - Kingdom Plantae and Kingdom Animalia. As knowledge about the living world increased , scientists started finding it difficult to classify some organisms. One such group of organisms is fungus as it stays stationary at one place like plants and like animals , it cannot produce it's own food . Thus, it had similarities with both animals and plants. Bacteria were another group of organisms that were difficult to classify in the two kingdom classification.

So that time the need of classification was felt.
