The albatross is hung around the mariner's neck by the crew to symbolize his guilt in killing the bird. The killing of albatross was accepted as good omen or good luck when the sea wind blew in their favor and the climate was moderate.But when they got stuck in the middle of the sea without having a single drop of water (the line- water water everywhere but no water to drink) even the weather was not in their favor they assumed the killing of humble albatross made them suffer the bad luck and repentance was accepted by all the fellow Marines. ( this depicts their fickle mindedness)
