answer: The constitution of India states in article 15 (4):'Nothing in [article 15] or in clause (2) of article 29 shall prevent the state from making any special provision for the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens of or for the scbeduled castes and the scheduled tribes

1. The constitution framers included the provision of reservations to uplift historically oppressed and marginalised sections of society,who were denied respect and equality.

2. The under-privileged and the under-represented needed equal opportunity in nation-building activities.

3. Under it, a percentage of seats are reserved in the public sector units, union and state civil services, union and state department and in all public and private educational institutes for the socially and economically back ward classes.
