The caste system that was prevalent in India since ancient times, created a division in the society. So the fight against the caste system was important to the freedom movement of India because the nationalist leaders urged all the section of the Indian society to fight against the colonial rule. All the nationalist leaders emphasized on the unity among the people. This unity could only be achieved once the Caste system is eliminated.

Therefore, the struggle against caste system was necessary. So the Indian National Congress and the nationalist leaders opposed the caste privileges and struggled for just civil rights and equal liberty for the growth of the individual without making any discrimination of sex, caste, or religion.
