why was the subcontinent able to support large population
Answers
- The subcontinent has always been a fertile landscape. Its fertile plains and numerous rivers support agriculture and hence, an abundance of food supports a large population.
Answer:
Indian subcontinent is densely populated for some geological, social, religious and economic reasons.
Geological : The subcontinent has the biggest delta on the earth, rich in alluvial slit. Mother Ganges brings fertile layers of alluvium to the land every year. During the monsoon, there is enough rain to water the crops and rivers flow like breast milk all over the year to the children of mother nature. This is why people are dependent on agriculture, while almost 60 percent are fully dependent for their bread and butter.
Most of the ancient civilizations were founded by the banks of the biggest of the rivers and Indus valley was one of them too. To cultivate this huge area, people needed their family to be joint and large in size. They emphasized on giving birth to a lot of children to maintain family inherited fields.

Social : According to the custom in the subcontinent, girls have to leave their paternal home and start living in their in-laws. This custom make married couples badly in need of at least a male child to look after them in their 60’s or 70’s. In order to conceive a boy child, they increase the population unknowingly.

Religious : People in recent past were not really aware of contraceptives, even if they knew, they were stigmatized. Contraceptives being prohibited by the scriptures and religious institutions played a vital role in population bombing.
Besides, low rate of participation of women in economic activities and decision-making, low rate of literacy, invasion of foreign colonialists etc. are some main reasons behind this huge population
