Because it brought good weather and the albatross that the poet symbolsis as a Christian soul. Good omen as such...

The southward wind was good for the sailors as it took them away from the land of mist and snow. As they moved,they weather became good and the other sailors were happy for The Ancient Mariner for he killed the Albatross who brought mist and fog in their journey.The bad omen was hence eliminated.
