People were afraid to travel underground.
Many felt that the iron monsters added to the mess and unhealthiness of the city.
The railway compartments were over crowed and polluted by smoke.
The atmosphere was a mixture of sulphur, coal and dust with fuel fumes from the gas lamps.

There are many reasons on the basis of which we can say that waste underground railways as iron monsters. Few are :
1. As being underground they actually, make a chance of shrinkage of upper level soil.
2. They also, some times create a vibration which being little can cause severe damage.
All is like monster done acts, so we refer it as iron monsters as they are made up of iron.
