The Vijayanagar army was dependent upon imports from the western coast for several reasons.
One major reason was that salt was manufactured along the western coast of the empire. Moreover, this coast was home to several places like Ankola, Mangalore, Barakur and more that served as the hub for foreign trade. Foreign merchants entered the empire through this coast to trade their silk, jewels and precious stones for spices like cloves, cardamom and pepper grown on the Western Ghats.
