Without a standard unit, you can't quantify anything by your measurement.

For example, to measure the mass of a body, we take gram as a standard unit for mass measurement and measure that the mass of that body is how many multiples of the standard unit (gram). If it 1000 times, we defines as 1 kilogram and so on.

if there is no standard unit, then the mass of the body will be different for different people according to their own different measurement unit. Then their measurements can't be comparable.Mass of a body changes from one person to another.

That's why for every measurement, a standard unit is defined to avoid the confusion and make the measurement universal.
