Answer:

Before shehnai, there was an instrument named “Pungi” which was played in the Aurangzeb's court. It was later banned due to it's shrill sound.

The people believed that this tradition would once again be revived.

So, a Barber decided to make a few changes to the Pungi.

He took a hollow stick and made a few adjacent holes on the surface. He realised that the sounds produced by passing air through the stick and opening and closing the holes was very melodic.

He played this instrument in the King's court and everyone was impressed.

Since it was invented by a Barber (Nai) and was played in the King's Court (Shah), this was named as “Shehnai
