Zitkala Sa was not punished. She had been admitted to an English school where she had to live according to the harsh, strict school rules. According to the school rules, she had to wear tight school uniform, wear short hair, and do everything in disciplined manner. However, all these rules were in contradiction to her culture. In her culture, shingled hair was worn by cowards and mourners. In order to save her hair from cutting, she hid in a dormitory. But she was soon found and dragged from down under the bed she was hiding. She was bound to the chair and her hair was cut.
