An excess of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the water, leads to an increased growth of toxic algae and aquatic plants, that cause poisoning and death in fish and otheranimals who feed on them. Presence of huge quantities of mercury in waterhas led to a lot of undesirable changes in aquatic species.
