why water evaporates at room temperature and boils at 100 c

It happens because some molecules on the surface of liquid get enough energy to escape as a vapour. At boiling point, all the molecules have that energy to escape as vapours. Remember, water automatically vanishes from your wet clothes, which them being at 100°C.
