A compound is formed when two or more elements combine chemically by accepting, donating or by sharing electrons.
Water is formed when an Hydrogen ion (H+) combines with an hydroxide ion(OH-).
Her is the balanced chemical equation:
H+ + OH- → H2O .
Now you might be wondering that in the reaction there are no two or more elements combining(because the reaction only has ions and only Hydrogen is an element while Hydroxide is not an element).
Well when two ions combine the result is also called a compound.
Hence water is a compound.

As water is made of one oxygen atom chemically bonded to 2 hydrogen atoms. Water is indeed a compound. We called water a compound, because it is mixture of hydrogen and oxygen.
