Water is a compound because it is composed of a definite number of atoms in a definite order while a mixture has no definite composition, it is a random order of substances.

Water(H2O) is compound not a mixture because both these constituents hydrogen and oxygen are chemically combined together in fixed ratio. But in mixtures constituents are not chemically combined with each other . Hence , water is a compound not a mixture.
