why water is transparent

Water appears transparent because its molecules do not absorb light in the visible range which is the one our eyes can see. It is not transparent to IR or microwave light wavelengths though. That is the mechanism by which microwave ovens work (the absorption of light energy in the microwave region by water molecules in food).

Explanation:

Electrons in water act in a similar way to visible light so they don't absorb or reflect most of the light. ... Instead they allow it to pass through relatively unimpeded, absorbing wavelengths like infrared and reflecting invisible UV.
