Water in a dam has potential energy because of its position. Potential energy is the energy possessed by anybody when it is in a specific position or is not moving.

EXPLANATION:

Water in the dam does not move unless the water is to be used for generating electric power. The water’s potential energy then changes to kinetic energy to rotate turbines attached to the dams. This rotating of turbines helps in generating electricity
