I think the question needs some modification.
The question must be probably:
Why aren't we able to read in direct sunlight while we can read easily in shade?
Dear friend,
Even the shade is due to sun's light. U really can't read in darkness, or can u?
The reason u can't read in direct sunlight is due to the intensity of light coming from the direct sunlight. The cones in your eye are letting u read in bright light. But if sun's light is falling directly on your eye, the cone cells are destroyed, and u can't read anything until, they are formed again. But in shade, the diffused sunlight enters ur eye so, its power doesn't destroy ur cones.
