Why we are able to see only half rainbow?

However ,we only see its upper half from the ground.

A rainbow is formed as the rays of the sun interact with the raindrops and reach our eyes. It is formed in the shape of a circle as the light is reflected to us at a constant angle relative to the ground ,keeping the observer at the centre of the circle .



Consequently, the lower half is not visible for an observer on the ground.

But the full rainbow can be observed from higher up(aeroplane or cliff) where light rays can reflect from the raindrops below the observer , thereby leading to this mesmerising view.
