We evolved to atmospheric weight and pressure…the gases that surround Earth making up our thin atmosphere. The weight creates pressure that is exerted on itself and what it surrounds. The molecular weight of Earth’s air is 29 g/mol.
The same goes for water, but the molecular weight is much higher at 18.01528 g/mol.
At the interface of surface water and the atmosphere, atmospheric pressure is ~ 14.7 psi, or 15 lbs per inch squared. The same goes for the surface water, in also exhibiting 14.7 psi or 15 lbs per inch squared. This is the exact scenario with our bodies on Earth’s atmospheric surface or when surface swimming. We don't feel it because the fluids in our body is pushing outward with the same 15 lbs/sq in force.
As defined, pressure is the force per unit area exerted against a surface by the weight of the molecules above that surface. Due to an increase in hydrostatic pressure, the deeper you go into water, the greater the force per unit area is exerted. For every 33 feet (10.06 meters) you go down, the pressure increases on you externally by 14.5 psi.
This is an increase of water pressure acting on you by 4.34 lb/in² for every 10 ft of descent. As you continue diving into the watery depths, there comes a point that your body’s internal pressures are surpassed by the water’s external pressures due to all the added water’s surface mass on down to the current depth you are at. Many sea animals have no problems with oceanic depth pressures because their bodies evolved to those environmental elements. Whales have flexible bones, where our more rigid ones would crack like toothpicks, while deep sea squid and octupi evolved solid incompressible flesh that maintains equalized pressure.
