“Ja”, “Za” or “Zaa” is an interesting way of teaching and learning multiplication tables in primary schools. My children said the tables using the word ja. Some say, it is a common mistake that time tables are said this way; while others say it is mispronunciation. My view is, counting or learning the mathematical tables using the small little word ja is an innovative one. It is easy to compose a multiplication song using the sweet and simple word ja and that makes learning a hard subject like mathematics fun and the school kids of all age groups love it. Even I get enthused reciting the song. Further, memorisation of the table becomes easier.
Coming now to the word ja, there is no such word in English vocabulary. It is a new word coined by fusing the sound of s (of the numerical plural) and are. The combination ja translates best into equals (=). For example:-
two ten (s are = ja/za) twenty
two ten ja twenty.
