Why we called d block elements as transition elements?

,acc to the latest definition element which contain atleast one unpaired d electron in their ground state or excited state are known as transition elements...therefore d block elements are known as transition elements...... moreover all tranition elements are d block elements but all d block elements are not transition elements....
