BECAUSE there are large intermolecular spaces and less force of attraction between the particles of gas.
but to do same through a block of wood we need karate expert ......
BECAUSE there are small intermolecular spaces and more force of attraction between the particles of a solid substance.

Air is a gas, it has more space in between particles. But solid block of wood is rigid, hence it is difficult to move our hands through it.
