Some main points that why we mention centuries instead of dates for some process :-

1) Process that took place long before are not noted down anywhere and thus there is a rough idea that it took place in following century or era

2) Events maybe spread throughout the century because of which a specific date couldn't be given

Example of process for which we can't mention specific date is - Discovery of fire
