Why we can't determine the place of Hydrogen in the periodic table?

Some of the properties of hydrogen are equal to alkali metals (1st group) while some of its properties are equal to halogens (7th group).

Hydrogen placed in the first column above alkali metal. It is because hydrogen and alkali metal have same property . However hydrogen also resemble halogen. Like halogen hydrogen is a gas and extend as a diatomic molecule (H2) it formed covalent compound like hydrogen and unlike alkali metal. Hence it is be placed above halogen group . Therefore mandeleev's was not able to explain the position of hydrogen on the periodic table
