The glucose units in cellulose are lined by beta 1-4 glycosidic bond. Humans can digest starch and glycogen as they have alpha 1-4 bonds. Enzymes produced in humans cannot act on beta linkages and such enzymes were thought to be produced by vermiform appendix. Hence, humans cannot digest cellulose but animals can.
