Some gases we can see : like nitrogen dioxide, but we mainly cannot see gas because it is air, and its molecules do not absorb the visible light.

We cannot see the gas because it is transparent because of light can travel through the air without being affected this is because molecules are spread out.
Some gases are actually visible like nitrogen dioxide for instance. The air is invisible because molecules don't absorb the light.
