hey mate when the food is cold rate of diffusion of the smell in air is less
but when the food is hot air around it is also heated and the diffusion rate is faster so we can sense it from far

a hot substance's molecules spread faster. Because the food is cold, the molecules don't spread easily and we get the smell only when we are closer to it.
