This day is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganesh is the symbol of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

During Ganesh Chaturthi, idols of Lord Ganesha are in installed in street corners (pandals) and in homes and elaborated decorations are done with lighting, flowers, mirrors etc. Pooja - Aarti's (prayer services) are performed daily.
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the arrival of Ganesha on earth.
Parvati or Gauri, was the daughter of the mountain king, Himavaan and Earth, was therefore her homeland - Maikaa. There fore, she came to the earth alone to visit her parents, leaving her husband and son behind.
Shiva couldn’t bear to live without his wife, and so he sent his son Ganesha right behind her to bring her back.
Ganesha thus came down to earth where he was welcomed with open arms, and his stay extended to 11 days.
Finally, remembering the duty on which he had come, he went back, taking his mother with him.

This is the story behind this celebration of 11 days of "Ganesh Utsav"
