Answer:

For the purpose of analysing, we need to know how much of goods sold by us are returned, so instead of debiting Sales A/c, we debited an account styled 'Sales Return A/c). This account practically represents debit side of sales account. This is the reasons Sales Returns are subtracted from Sales A/c in the Trading A/c.
