O2 being a byproduct of photosynthesis is given out by plants while the process is still on. We inhale the air and exhale carbon dioxide keeping the oxygen because of its importance in respiration.

Co2 is used by plants in photosynthesis and O2 used by us for producing energy from food. So they exhale O2 during photosynthesis and we exhale Co2.
