Answer:

We usually get hiccups when we eat too much or too quickly. The stomach is situated below the diagram and gets distended when we do so. This irritates the diaphragm and it contracts, thus causing hiccups. Usually, hiccups last for 2 to 4 minutes. If they last longer than half and hour, consult a doctor.

Why do we get hiccups?

》 Hiccups often occur when food enters the trachea instead of the oesophagus

》 After masticating, bolus passes through the pharynx which is a common passage for both food and air. Pharynx leads to oesophagus and trachea

  • Oesophagus : Food
  • Pharynx : Air

》 Though a cartilaginous flap known as Epiglottis guards the trachea, sometimes food does pass through the glottis, leading to the trachea
