- The reason for laying on the left side is for gravity to assist the fluid filling the colon. When you lay on the left side, the fluid can go up further into the colon because of the way the anatomy is-the fluid is basically flowing downhill into the colon. If you lay on the right side, the colon is in a position to where the fluid has to flow "uphill" to fully fill.
- This position (left lateral position) allows the flow of solution by gravity into the sigmoid colon and rectum.
- What is enema? It is an insertion of into the rectum and sigmoid colon to stimulate defecation.
- Left lateral position is is also referred as the recumbent or lateral decubitus position.
- In left lateral position the patient lies on his left side, with hips and kneed flex. Top leg Infront of bottom leg.
