Drinking cold water, your body will have to supply heat in order to bring it to normal body temperature. This loss of heat causes a fall in body temperature which we sense as a cooling effect.

The temperature difference is crucial. A larger difference not only produces a greater cooling effect but also much faster. Greater the temperature difference, faster the heat transfer.
