Deficiency also causes thyroid gland problems, including "endemic goitre." In many countries, iodine deficiency is a major public health problem that can be cheaply addressed by purposely adding small amounts of iodine to the sodium chloride salt.

Iodine is actually a trace dietary mineral, present commonly in eggs, dairy products, grains and sea foods. It is mixed with table salt to avoid any iodine deficiency. Even though it is a trace mineral, it is required by the body for efficient functioning of the thyroid gland that produces hormones regulating growth, development and metabolism.

Normal iodine level in the body leads to normal thyroid and brain functions, healthy pregnancies, balanced weight, healthy appearance etc.
