why we make deeper footprint in mud than on dry ground?

since dry ground is hard and can support our weight whereas as mud is mixture of water and soil and is soft and thus cannot support our weight but is we increase the size of our foot it will be easier to walk on mud as well because increase in surface area causes our weight to distribute on larger area
