Explanation:

to open & close the door we need to apply torque

torque is the product of distance from the axis of rotation ( I.e., hinge) and the force applied.

when we increase the distance of the door handle from the hinge, force applied decreases.therefore we place handle at maximum possible distance from the hinge.if we place the handle near the hinge we need to apply much large force because distance from the hinge is very less. that is why we can't open /close the door by applying force at the hinges
