We need to decolurise the leaf before adding iodine solution in the experimentbecause the presence of colour may deviate the results. For example, let's take a leaf which doesn't has any starch but has a violet colour on it. After we add iodine we may think that the violet colour is due to starch. But in reality it doesn't has any starch.
