Feeding the world requires a lot of water. In most countries more water is used for irrigating land than for any other purpose. Globally 70% of all water taken from river, lake and groundwater systems supports irrigated crops and the feeding and watering of animals. In New Zealand a slightly higher percentage of water taken for human use supports irrigation and stock (80%) - not surprising given agriculture is the backbone of our economy.
