Why we need to rub magnesium ribbon with sand paper before burning it​

we have to rub it with a sandpaper because a layer magnesium oxide is deposited on the layer of aluminium when it comes in contact with atmospheric oxygen ,  which does not allow to burn magnesium effectively hence a sandpaper is rubbed on the metal piece to remove that oxide layer and the burning is efficient  .
