The most basic reason that cells are stained using elements like iodine is to enhance visualization of the cell or certain cellular compounds under a microscope.Cell may be also be stained to highlight metabolic processes or to differentiate between live and dead cell in a sample.Once the cell is stained subsequent treatment with a dilute hydrochloric acid and ethyl alcohol containing 3% HCl will not decolrise them.Such cells are thus termed acid-fast in that the cell will hold the stain fast in the presence of the acidic decolorizing acid.
