It is not necessary as such, but it always helps to know the local language of the state you are living in, as it helps you to blend in with the crowd and also helps things get done easier, let me give you my example, I am a Tamilian who grew up in Hyderabad, and I speak fluent Telugu, and I have friends who do’nt speak Telugu. When it comes to getting things done, be it at college with a lecturer or with the auto rickshaws or even asking people around for directions, I have noticed my friends who do not speak Telugu face a little difficulty or do not get their things done in an efficient manner, whereas people go out of their way to help you if you speak their language, and also, the sheer fact that I being a Tamilian and not a native Telugu speaker has shocked people in a pleasant way, the respect which you get when you’re a non native but you speak the local language is a feeling which can only be experienced and not described in words.
