Shaheed Diwas is observed on 23rd March every year to pay tribute to the 3 young freedom fighters. This day is a special day and India remembers its freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar.

These 3 heroes of India’s struggle for independence were hanged to death on this date in the year 1931. These 3 were convicted for assassinating John Saunders, a British police officer.

What’s the history behind the hanging of Bhagat Singh

The Simon Commission was set up by the British Government under the leadership of Sir John Simon. This was done to understand the political situation in India. This Commission was met with protests by Indians on account of the fact that there were no Indians included in the Commission. When this Commission arrived in Lahore, it was met with protests under the leadership of Lala Lajpat Rai. These protests frustrated the Britishers who were worried about it getting stronger day by day.

Superintendent of police James A Scott ordered a lathicharge and personally assaulted Lala Lajpat Rai. He was badly injured and due to this and he died on 17th November, 1928.

The killing of the freedom fighter and leader, Lala Lajpat Rai angered the young brave-hearts Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. The three of them decided that they will avenge the killing of Rai. They planned to kill Scott but things did not go according to the plan and they accidentally killed Saunders.

As a punishment of the killing of Saunders, the three were sentenced to death.
