Used in light bulbs. The very thin metal filament inside the bulb would react with oxygen and burn away if the bulb were filled with air instead of argon. Argon stops the filament burning away because it is unreactive.

yuvrajpachadhari: hii, you are correct but I want the reason why not neon. why only argon?
harshitsharma7594: The gas is inert, does not react with hot filament, and keeps bulb safe from atmospheric pressure effect. ... Maybe, but I never heard of neon gas being used in an incandescent bulb. They often use argon, krypton, or xenon to prevent the tungsten from evaporating too quickly.
yuvrajpachadhari: ya, that's what the question is why only argon, krypton or xenon. why not neon or any other noble gas as they are also unreactive and will not react with the filament
harshitsharma7594: Neon and argon gas by themselves are not. They are inert gases that can be found in the air we breath every day. The minute mercury in neon signsis no more dangerous than what is presently housed within the run-of-the-mill fluorescent lightsthat have been lighting our businesses for many years. ... Neon can last decades. HERE IS YOUR ANSWER , MATE :-

The very thin metal filament inside thebulb
would react with oxygen and burn away if
the bulb were filled with air instead of
argon. Argon stops the filament burning
away because it is unreactive. Used in
lasers. Krypton lasers are used by surgeons
to treat certain eye problems and to remove
birthmarks.
